Effect of Calcium on the Growth of Djulis (Chenopodium formosanum Koidz.) Sprouts

Taiwanese quinoa (Chenopodium formosanum Koidz, commonly known as djulis) is a close relative of quinoa, rich in nutritional value and high active components, such as, betaine polyphenols, vital food crop. We investigated the effects calcium carbonate on growth physiology Djulis sprouts because an essential nutrient for plants that can strengthen plant’s root system improve its absorption; moreover, under abiotic stress, transmits messages to enhance cell tolerance. Experiments were conducted using 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5 mM hydroponic liquid treatment. Treatment with promoted djulis; specifically, length, plant height, aboveground fresh weight, dry weight increased by 55%, 12%, 37%, 17%, respectively. In further investigation physiological change djulis treated carbonate, results showed after days treatment contents hydrogen peroxide malondialdehyde decreased significantly while chlorophyll content significantly. Antioxidant enzyme activity was improved. The activities superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase 42%, 25%, 35.7%, 56.4%, respectively, underground parts fourfold threefold, proline, regarded osmoprotectant, reduced 12%. Thus, we concluded their antioxidant capacity, reduce reactive oxygen species, promote crop growth.
